Microbladed brows: All your questions answered

I was too scared to have my eyebrows microbladed for a long time. I was worried about being stuck with a shape or shade that didn’t look right and I just didn’t know very much about the microblading healing process (I mistakenly thought my eyebrows would completely scab over).

On reflection, this is a slightly ironic concern as it looks far more natural than doing them myself ever could. As my brows are fairly thin and very uneven, I was the perfect candidate and I regret not doing it sooner.

If microbladed brows are something you are considering I have the answers to every single question imaginable — and if I don’t, then ask me in the comments. I got mine done at the London Brow Studio in Clapham, London, run by a lovely lady called Malin who is offering my readers a discount (details at the end of this post).

What is eyebrow microblading?

Eyebrow microblading is a semi-permanent make up treatment similar to a tattoo, that uses pigment to create natural brows. It is particularly good for people who have very thin or patchy brows. In your appointment the clinician will measure your face and your eyebrows to create a perfectly natural and symmetrical shape that is best suited to your face and create a frame. At first look, this makes it seem like your brows are going to be huge but all the microblading is inside this frame, so it is actually smaller.

The microblading needle is actually six needles in a row to create a blade. This breaks to the skin, inserting pigment as it goes. Extra pigment is also applied. Malin did each eyebrow and then applied numbing cream before doing it again.

Stages of the microblading process

What a lot of people don’t realise is that microblading your brows is actually a 42-day process. After the initial treatment the brows take around two weeks to heal and then after four weeks you have to go for a second treatment. This is because during the healing pigment can be lost due to scabbing and so any patches need to be filled in. Then another two weeks to heal and voila.

Microblading healing process/time

Apart from the fear of having bad brows done, one of the biggest reasons I kept putting off trying it out was fear of the healing process. I imagined huge scabs would form over my eyebrows, but this just isn’t the case.

A few days after getting your eyebrows microbladed the pigment gets darker, which can freak people out. After this, they do scab but not across the entire brow. The tiny fine lines scab and you can barely see it. When it sheds, I didn’t notice anything other than a few flakes that looked like dry skin. After two weeks they were healed.

How long does microblading take?

Each appointment takes around two hours. My first application was two and a half, but my second was one hour and 45 minutes. I was really worried about going out of my mind with boredom, but it was actually enjoyable. But when I next need a top-up, I’ll probably have a podcast or two downloaded.

Is microblading safe?

Yes. A good, reputable service will require a patch test ahead of the treatment to check for allergies. I didn’t have to go to the London Brow Studio for this, Malin kindly popped a sample of the pigment in the post.

Does microblading hurt?

In short, yes. The first time was like a soft scratch and was only painful on the bottom/middle area, most likely because the skin is thinner here. The second time it hurt more and the numbing cream didn’t do much, even though in my first appointment it made a big difference. Either way, the pain was totally manageable and short-lived.

Is microblading permanent?

Microblading is semi-permanent. Guidelines say it lasts two years, but this varies from person to person. If you use AHAs, BHAs, PHAs or retinol the amount of time will probably decrease because you’re speeding up skin cell turnover.

The good thing about it is even when it fades you can easily apply makeup in the perfect shape, using it as an outline.

Also, you can speed up the process if you want rid (you won’t). As it is applied to the top layer of skin (epidermis), microdermabrasion, peels and exfoliating facials will make the pigment fade faster.

How much is microblading (UK)?

Microblading is usually around £300 in the UK but Malin at the London Brow Studio charges £200. Her business is new, so she’s currently building up her client base. She also does nails, so you can go for a shellac manicure. Despite the already impressively low price, she’ll give you 15% off (making it £170) if you mention me. That includes both appointments and any necessary aftercare.

She is really lovely, working out of her studio in Clapham. She’ll add you to Whatsapp and check on you during the healing process and is always happy to reply to any questions.
